JIN-394 -- Abe's First Step Toward a New Foreign Policy

Submitted by Japan Inc on November 24, 2006

Prime Minister Abe's trip to South Korea and China breathed fresh air into the stale diplomacy of Japan. This was only a first step in the evolution of a new foreign policy, but it was an important first step ...

TT-400 -- We're 400 today! e-biz news from Japan

Terrie Lloyd's picture
Submitted by Terrie Lloyd on November 20, 2006

This week we were going to comment on the pending IPO by the Gaba English school, and the sorry financial and moral state of English schools in Japan in general. However, given that this is issue Number 400 of Terrie's Take, we thought it might be better to take some time out and toot our own horn. Gaba won't list until December 1st, so plenty of time for them next week...

JIN-393 -- Septuagenarians for Constitutional Revision

Submitted by Japan Inc on November 17, 2006

Prime Minister Abe has declared revision of the Constitution a goal of his administration. He and like-minded conservatives believe the present Constitution, drafted by Americans at the behest of the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers after the Second World War, bears the stamp of a foreign power and is not Japanese in spirit.

Earlier on this month, the Yomiuri newspaper carried an article about an auto parts manufacturer in Akitakata, Hiroshima, which is being investigated for hiring more foreign "trainees" than allowed by the rules.

On June 22nd a rather unique if small outsourcing company, called Japan Third Party (JTP), listed on the JASDAQ. Although at first glance the business looks like a pretty standard operation, the company is special in that a full 95% of its business comes from foreign technology firms (not end users).

JIN-392 -- Banzai the Emperor and Empress!

Submitted by Japan Inc on November 4, 2006

Last week I met the Emperor and Empress of Japan. I regret that I'm able to describe the circumstances in only vague terms, for to be specific would violate a trust and prejudice their Majesties against returning.

JIN-391 -- Female CEOs in Japan

Submitted by Japan Inc on October 29, 2006

Ever since reading a recent article about the under-representation of female CEOs in Japan, I've been racking my brains to find one. My first thoughts were of Tomoyo Nonaka of Sanyo Electric or Fumiko Hayashi of Daiei...

JIN-390 -- The Death of Sports Day Greatly Exaggerated

Submitted by Japan Inc on October 29, 2006

Japan's weekly magazines are racy no-holds-barred journals that attract a readership bored with the insipid fare in the mainstream press. They are where Japanese look for the rest of the story.

TT-397 -- 500 yen pay rises, ebiz news from Japan

Terrie Lloyd's picture
Submitted by Terrie Lloyd on October 29, 2006

About five years ago, we wrote about the phenomenon of Japanese bedrock manufacturing companies firing thousands of people. One after another, companies such as Matsushita, Nissan and others broke the bad news to employees aged 50 or over that their days were numbered. Among many others, we were stunned to witness that apparent death of a unique corporate culture that saw protecting the welfare of employees as being more important than making profits.

JIN-389 -- Black Ships and Brown Hair

Submitted by Japan Inc on October 23, 2006

Blackening the teeth dates from ancient times in Japan. However, the stratum of society who performed this practice changed with the age. From the 17th century women blackened their teeth upon marriage, sort of a rite of passage to adulthood.
