Terrie Lloyd's picture
Submitted by Terrie Lloyd on January 23, 2007

Welcome to the first issue of Terrie's Take for 2007. The signs are that the first half of the year at least is going to be a good one, certainly the mandarins at the Bank of Japan and our leaders in government and big business are saying so...

JIN-399 -- Year of the BoSox

Submitted by Japan Inc on January 17, 2007

2007 dawned brilliant in the Kanto. I joined several thousand other people to watch the sun rise above a hill on the beach at Kamakura on the 1st.
All gazed, cameras poised, in anticipation of the ascension, and it arrived to a cacophony of oohs and aahs and whoops and wails from a spectating crowd in a netherworld of sake intoxication and sleep deprivation...

JIN-398 -- Japan's Year-End Blue Lights

Submitted by Japan Inc on December 22, 2006

Over the past several years more and more Japanese have been lighting up their homes at the end of the year. In my Yokohama neighborhood stars twinkle in windows, glowing Santa Clauses climb rope ladders up the sides of houses, snowmen illuminate paths to homes...

TT-404 -- 2006 in Review, ebiz news from Japan

Terrie Lloyd's picture
Submitted by Terrie Lloyd on December 18, 2006

2006 has been an eventful and productive year for business in Japan. This was the year that we marked the longest period of business expansion since War II, longer even, than the Izanagi boom in the mid-1960's. Being immersed in the noise and bustle which is Tokyo...

TT-403 -- Mobage phenomenon, ebiz news from Japan

Terrie Lloyd's picture
Submitted by Terrie Lloyd on December 11, 2006

According to Tom Sato, what's hot right now is the cell phone site Mobage Town, from mobile content developer Dena. "Moba-ge" is a contraction of mobile games, and is a cross between a Social Network System (SNS) and a games portal. Essentially it serves up loads of games and provides rewards that the players can collect and trade. The kicker is that because it is SNS based, it has experienced a humungous word-of-mouth growth over the last 9 months...

JIN-396 -- Hearing the Soul of Language

Submitted by Japan Inc on December 9, 2006

One day 30 years ago I hopped into a cab in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, and uttered a single word: "station." "You speak good Japanese," said the driver. The moral: Japanese have low, if any, expectations, for the mother tongue as rendered by non-native speakers. Which is to say they have a peculiar regard for the national language...

If someone asked you to guess which company in Japan sells the most software in this country, most people would probably think Microsoft, Softbank, or Symantec. But the fact is that the seller of the most packages in this country for at least the last 2 years is a company that you've probably never heard of -- SourceNext, a firm located at Roppongi Hills...

JIN-395 -- There's No Business Like the Hearse Business

Submitted by Japan Inc on November 29, 2006

Japanese children are admonished not to point at a passing hearse, since to do so would bring their parents' demise. There are regional variations on this admonition. For example, in Sapporo children are taught to conceal a thumb ("oya-yubi") as a precaution against their parents ("oya") dying...
