How long has Morgan & Banks been doing business in Japan?
Morgan & Banks Hong Kong Ltd. opened its Japan branch on May 1, 1999.

How is Japan important to your overall strategy?
Our entry into the Japanese market has been extremely timely and crucial for our recruitment and consulting business. We believe in our ability to provide the right hiring strategies for companies. We aim to utilize our expertise in HR consulting and recruiting to assist both Japanese companies and foreign capital companies to succeed in these changing labor and economic times.

What is your present business focus?
Being new in the Japanese market, we are focusing at what we do best-recruiting and consulting-to the Japanese operations of our regional clients in the banking and technology arena. We have built the first few months of our business servicing the needs of our existing clients in their Tokyo operations. The next business we are planning to introduce into Japan will be our outplacement business in the first two quarters of 2000.

How do you see recruiting opportunities in Japan in the near future?
It is our corporate objective to make Japan the second largest revenue source for the Morgan & Banks group in the next 2-3 years. With the changing labor market, evolving business practices, and a growing talent pool, Japan presents immense opportunities for Morgan & Banks' recruiting methodologies-global and Asia Pacific regional Internet recruiting, ad-search, ad-selection, and executive search.

Tell us about your strategic activities for 1999/2000.
Morgan & Banks is built on a vision and core value of "Creating Success With People." We believe in our ability to provide the "Intern to CEO" recruitment solution for our clients worldwide, with value-added strategic HR consulting that goes along with each individual assignment and project. We aim to be in the "back pocket" of our clients' businesses.

What are your company's major activities today?
The Morgan & Banks Group covers all spectrums of the recruitment market through our sister companies, TASA International, MSL, Monster.com, Alectus, and Labour LinQ. The services provided by Morgan & Banks are designed to make the task of finding the right person for the right job as fast, and as time and cost efficient as possible. We specialize in human resources across areas, such as executive search and selection, management contracting, management consulting, HR consulting, outplacement, and psychological assessment. Predominantly, the levels of recruitment are middle- to senior-level management and senior executives. Our recent success in managing large-scale recruitment projects for start-up operations in various locations across Asia and Europe adds to another dimension of our capabilities.

What about the overall state of IT recruiting in Japan today?
Morgan & Banks in Asia is known for its strength in IT recruiting, and, naturally, in Japan our success thus far has been in placing both middle and senior IT professionals with the Fortune 500 companies. Even prior to having Monster.com in the group, the Morgan & BanksŐ own Job Hound has been and continues to be tremendously successful in both the Asian and Australian marketplace. As an organization, we believe in using technology to recruit, and this has been our biggest competitive advantage and value to our IT clients.

What differentiates your company from your competitors?
It is well recognized that successful recruitment in a "candidate-scarce" market like Japan requires the evolution and adoption of new ideas and technologies. We pride ourselves in the ability to create and deliver innovative methodologies in order to target and attract high caliber candidates. To name but a few of our more recent initiatives: 1. Specialization among our consultants; 2. Staging candidate events; 3. Monster.com (soon to launch Monster.com in Asia and in Japan); 4. Press advertising with premium advertising space and rates for clients; 5. Access to a global network of offices in North America, Australasia, Europe, and other parts of Asia; 6. Building extranet technology ability to access overseas candidate databases for our clients; 7. A shared market intelligence research team throughout all offices. While we have been regarded as a "young and aggressive" company, we like to think that we are professional, energetic, creative, and resourceful, and we hold close to all our firm belief in the Morgan & Banks' code of ethics.

Do you have any advice for IT job seekers?
IT job seekers, or any job seekers for that matter, must always strive to make themselves "employable." The IT industry just isn't about technology alone. It is a knowledge-based industry, which requires one to learn continuously. Working with people and through people to be able to communicate your ideas and concepts effectively are crucial elements. Blindly chasing after the changes in technology is not enough. Focus on the soft skills and business acumen as well.
